thee authors, astonishingly, come out in favor of exclamation points (“ ‘Thanks!!!!’ is way friendlier than ‘Thanks’ ”), abbreviations (“Is LOL . . . really inherently more opaque than FYI?”), and emoticons (those smiley faces and the like may “bug many people but they make us smile”).

How often do you use the ! in e-mail??? I find myself using it all the time, at first I thought it was some kind of iconoclast usage, a rebel against my English teachers who abhorred its use. then I read this:
